Hotspot: Atelier 27

Atelier 27 is a new dedicated retail space for Ireland’s young designers, and is located above the amazing Om Diva on Drury street in Dublin. Housing 14 resident designers (2 Milliners, 3 Jewellery Designers, 1 Design Duo and 7 clothing designers), the Atelier also gives its residents the chance to rent a private studio in the building and use the professional sewing room. It is hoped that the designers will take part in teaching at the workshops in the Om Diva Sip and Stitch nights. There will be a dedicated atelier on the fourth floor of the building in which the residents can hold mini shows or private viewings. The Atelier aims to provide a forum for young Irish designers to design, sell and develop their brand under one roof.

Some of the designers at the Atelier include Carolyn Moore, Alice Moyon, Umit Kutluk, Rose & Voom, and Maria Tapper.

Guest Post: ‘I wish I had never…’

‘Somewhere Yonder’ is a personal blog by Róisin, an Irish girl in London, who shares her fun, frolics and festivities in a uniquely humourous and vivid way…

When Metro Chica asked for a guest post on something I’ve worn but look back on with a mixture of mortification and nausea (I paraphrase) it was hard to know where to begin.

Being a child of the 80s/ 90s, there are a quite a few outfits of mine that should never have seen the light of day. Picking just one was a bit of a Sophie’s Choice but without the trauma of having to save one of my children over the other… First up, there was the awful cowgirl-motif top with fringing that was purchased during the heyday of the country’s love affair with all things Western, the teeny tiny dress my friends bought me for my 17th birthday (backless and very nearly skirt-less) and then there was the canary yellow denim jacket I bought with my Confirmation money. But the one fashion boo-boo that probably sticks with me most was my Confirmation outfit itself.

Confirmation in Ireland is a fairly big deal, or at least it was in my day. It’s the first time many of us got to exercise a degree of control over out sartorial choices for a big occasion. For your Communion, religious nut jobs traditions dictate bridal wear of the miniature variety (which, on mature reflection, is really weird). Your Confirmation is different. You’re about to go to secondary school. You’re a mature, fashion-responsible young woman who understands the significance of making such an important choice. Photo upon photo upon photo was going to be taken of you. If you’re mother is anything like my mother, you even went for the professional photo, which hangs on the living room wall and will do so until the end of days.  The point I’m trying to make is that your Confirmation outfit is an outfit that refuses to be forgotten, no matter how hard you try.

So why do I regret mine so much? Well, my outfit was the shhhtyyyyle of the time, you understand. It was a black and cream pinstripe number. The wide leg trouser was big at the time-voluminously so. A matching waistcoat, a cream blouse and a big floppy hat replete with matching corsage completed the look. I can even remember where we bought it-a distinctly middle-aged ladies boutique in the Crescent Shopping Centre in Limerick. Alarm bells should have been ringing in my twelve year old ears. Alas, like many a maiden at the time, I thought I looked grown-up and fierce fancy. Unfortunately, I looked like Blossom.

I do happen to have a photo of outfit in question because my father, in his infinite wisdom, decided to put it on Facebook. Thank you, Mark Zuckerberg, for making that possible. (Incidentally, underneath this on Facebook, my brother Ger [@midnightcourt] has left this comment: “Can’t see Roisin in that photo, but isn’t that Blossom from off the television?” Because he’s funny like that you see.)

Some choices – fashion or otherwise – live on in memory, some on easily-destructible film and most, nowadays, on the bloody internet. I wish I’d never bought an outfit for my Confirmation that made me look like a teenager from an early 90s sitcom. I wish people hadn’t taken so many photos that day. I wish my dad had never learned how to use a scanner. And, not for the first time, I wish Mark Zuckerberg had gotten out more in college.

Penneys/Primark Spring Summer collection 2011

I meant to do this post a fortnight ago but I couldn’t bear to think about light clothing in the midst of our arctic conditions! However, it’s finally starting to thaw, and with the thaw comes thoughts of venturing to the shops and starting to buy some pieces for Springtime. And where better to start than Penneys when your wallet is light after the excess of Christmas! I bought some great pieces from the A/W collection that have gotten lots of comments (namely the fur lined heeled moccasin boots) and now have my eyes on some of the pieces featured below in their SS11 collection.

One of my favourite pieces, this beach scene print dress is sure to be popular. It has a look of Erdem to it, and I like the structured fit. Due in store at the end of January.

If you wear one thing this week… #25

…make it flat boots! Regular readers will know of my obsession with heels – I’m usually in the ‘the higher the better‘ camp and regularly choose style over comfort. But in this snowy/icy weather one has to be sensible in some ways at least, and decent footwear is a must! So what kind of footwear can look stylish, yet give you some grip in the freezing cold weather? It has to be a flat boot – be it biker, over the knee or riding style – they will go with everything in your wardrobe! And in case you’re wondering – no, I don’t think UGG’s are acceptable footwear in wet weather!

…make it slightly sheer! Ladies, I know its freezing out these days but one look I love seeing around town is that sheer-top-mixed-with-woolly-cardigan trend. Beautiful! I’ve always had a bit of a thing for sheer fabrics such as lace and chiffon and lightweight silk, I must admit. I love how it looks and how its the perfect fabric to mix with a contrasting one such as velvet, wool or jean. It’s also hella sexy and comfortable – two things always at the top of my wishlist!! Get some inspiration below…

…make it tights! Brrrrr its cold out there… Today was the first day since Easter that I felt the need to wear a pair of tights under my dress. And rather than feeling sorry about the loss of warm weather, I was actually kinda excited to root through my drawer and see what tights I had stashed away! I love tights (cos I hate my knees) – I love patterns, colours, textures, all deniers and styles. Tights are the business!

Milan Fashion Week SS’11

Ah Milan. Where no one does grown-up glamour better! Candy colours, a mix of fabrics, shoes that will be everywhere and ladylike silhouettes – I loved it all! My favourites were probably Gucci and Gianfranco Ferré but it was a tough call. See my favourite looks below…

London Fashion Week SS’11

Dare I say I preferred London FW to New York FW??! I felt there was more on offer in terms of creativity, colour, variety and trends. While NYFW was all about the minimalism, London was all about prints, feathers and leathers! Impossible to pick my favourite but Peter Pilotto, Erdem and John Rocha were up there for me. See my favourite looks below…

…make it velvet! I think it’s finally that kind of weather where I can start talking about heavy fabrics, luxe materials and oh-so-snug clothing right??! Well I’m gonna, because this week I’ve been lusting after the most rich of fabrics, velvet. And I’m not being particular here – oh no – I’ll take it on dresses, skirts, tops or shoes. Not to mention a dinky velvet hairband or a new blazer! Embrace the velvet people! Its gonna be everywhere…

…make it lace! One fabric guaranteed to always get you noticed is lace – and its been all over the catwalks this year making it one of the looks to love for A/W. Generally when people think of lace, they put it into one of two categories – gothic black or virginal white. But as shown below by Karen Gillan, this season’s lace is all about the colours! Think aubergines, moss greens and camel tones and you’re already on the path to looking stylishly spot on…
